THE COMPANY
This Chicago area private investment firm manages or advises several U.S. based taxable entities and off-shore entities, two charitable foundations, various operating companies, and strategic investment entities. One taxable investment pool and two foundations’ assets are currently invested in traditional and alternative assets, and managed by external professional money managers. The three investment pools share a similar asset allocation. The strategic investment LLC’s are designed to take advantage of strategic market opportunities. Approximately 20 people work in the firm’s offices in various functions including direct private investing (control and minority positions), direct investing in public companies, accounting and tax compliance, and administration.
THE POSITION
Reporting to the CFO, the Tax Director will provide valuable input on all deal structures. He/she will review each deal from a tax and compliance perspective. This person will manage the relationship with the outside tax accounting firms. Specific responsibilities include:
· Direct the monthly accounting requirements for several investment partnerships, private foundations, trusts and individual investments.
· Function as the internal tax resource with regard to all aspects of domestic hedge funds, investment partnership allocations, trusts, individual taxation and private foundations.
· Participate in the development and implementation of an integrated custody, performance report and general ledger system.
· Build a tax team in a relatively new family office, including organization of historical and current tax documents, training and mentoring internal professionals on a wide variety of economic and tax issues as they relate to individual, trust, private foundation and investment partnerships, and closely managing internal quality control.
· Work closely with outside service providers to ensure accurate and timely deliverables to our clients and regulatory agencies.
· Participate in monthly communications with family members on topics including, but not limited to performance of investments, trust and individual cash flow requirements, new investments and individual/entity taxation.
· Assist with entity formation, including document review and facilitation of discussions with outsider service providers regarding the economic and tax considerations associated with the proposed structure.
· Provide tax support to internal investment funds with respect to direct investments in operating companies.
· Draft internal memorandums as a means to communicate economic and tax research and conclusions to the Chief Financial Officer and family members.
· Respond to ad hoc requests from family members, the Chief Financial Officer and our outside service providers.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Above all, this person must be a team player willing to contribute wherever needed. The individual must fit well with a closely knit team, this is not a silo-type environment. Experience and traits should include:
· 8-10 years experience in a family office, investment partnership or similar environment.
· Must possess analytical reasoning, creative problem solving abilities, effective verbal and written communication skills, and strong organizational skills.
· Demonstrated team player, self starter, and independent thinker.
· Proven ability to work in a fast paced environment with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
· Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
· Demonstrates the highest ethical and professional standards.
· PC experience – MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Quickbooks.
· BA/BS in Accounting, licensed CPA.
